Recordist's notes
I was thinking all day yesterday about everyday sounds, and had been too much on my computer all day long. To distance myself from the screen, I decided to take pleasure in making the dinner (as I often do). Standing in the kitchen I wondered how many countless times have I listened to this combination of Mark and his children chatting in the other rooms, the noise of the dishwasher, and all of the little culinary noises which result from preparing our food. This is the soundscape of my home. There is no sound I like better, the moment my key is in the door and I hear the familiar warm, woody acoustics of this place, I feel safe and happy and loved. This the soundtrack of a totally normal, completely uneventful Monday night making a curry. It is the most mundane and precious collection of little sounds I can imagine - the sound of the compost bin as I clack it open with my foot, the lovely round dings the saucepans that we bought a few years ago make when I stir in them. The chopping and grinding of ingredients and spices. The warmth of my family around me. I love the domestic soundscape.
