About this sound

This first movement from "Of Minong" explores two images: (1) a very still early morning by Washington Creek as the white-throated sparrow breaks the silence and is gradually joined by other natural sounds, and (2) observations of sunlight dancing on the waves and ripples of Lake Superior.

Why parks record sound

The NPS Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division monitors soundscapes in parks across the United States. Natural quiet is treated as a resource to protect, like clean air or dark skies: noise from aircraft, vehicles and machinery can mask animal communication and change the experience of a place.
