Recordist's notes
The böd at Nesbister is in a truly beautiful situation, a fifteen minute walk from where you can dump a car, perched at the edge of the water, at the end of a small, rocky peninsula. There is a chemical toilet and a cold tap there, and it's an old fishing hut. No electricity. People who have stayed there in the past have adorned the ledge of the small window with great beach finds; bones, shells, pretty stones, pieces of glass worn smooth by the sea, and driftwood. There is a small stove which you can burn peat in, and I set the fire up in this before heading down the bay to collect more driftwood kindling for the next person to stay after me. I set up EDIROL R-09 to document the wonderful low drone of a small peat-burning stove in an off-grid cottage with thick stone walls, thinking that this kind of domestic soundscape would have been the background for many nights of knitting in Shetland in the past.
