Recordist's notes

The böd at Nesbister is in a truly beautiful situation, a fifteen minute walk from where you can dump a car, perched at the edge of the water, at the end of a small, rocky peninsula. There is a chemical toilet and a cold tap there, and it's an old fishing hut. People who have stayed there in the past have adorned the ledge of the small window with great beach finds; bones, shells, pretty stones, pieces of glass worn smooth by the sea, and driftwood. There is a small stove which you can burn peat in, and I set the fire up, ate a simple dinner of cheese and rice cakes, then ventured out onto the rocks to listen to everything around me. Terns are the loudest thing in the evening by Nesbister, but the sheep who graze all around the peninsula were doing their evening time greetings, and the otters who live on a tiny island quite near to the böd were shyly going for their swims. You can hear them splashing in this recording, but though I could see their sleek brown heads bobbing in the water, they were impossible to photograph! You can hear me shifting around a bit on the cold rocks. I sat there for over an hour, transfixed by such quiet, and such a lovely congregation of animals. Recorded with Naiant X-Xs and FOSTEX FR-2LE.
