Recordist's notes
The embankment for the bridge carrying European Route E8 (which travels from Tromsø / Romsa to Turku, Finland) channels the river and creates a small tidal estuary. Rain can be heard drumming on my umbrella and as the spray sent up from the vehicles speeding past some 50 metres away. Seabirds circle and, characteristic of some of the coastal island sounds (such as those at Hamna), their calls are joined by birds more usually associated with wood and town. I’d tried to record near this location in March, when the water was ice, snow or slush, and the intensity of the high frequency energy made it hard to find anything that would be listenable. Even positioning a small bus shelter between me and the traffic made little difference.
