Recordist's notes

I woke around 03.30am, decided to check the stream on my phone and was almost blown out of bed by the sound. This location's first nightingale of the year was singing so close to the mic that the meters were pumping in the red and the phone-speaker badly distorting, unable to cope with the volume. A totally unexpected shock in the sleepy small hours. This track was recorded an hour later, when he had moved slightly further away, but often still too close for comfort. It shows just how loud these birds can be. Nightingales are around 15/16cm in size, not large at all, but pack an incredible sonic punch. And all this immediately after having flown perhaps 7000km while migrating back from West Africa. Impressive! Neither did he take any notice of the equally close, and loud, passing tram.
