Recordist's notes

This is Sandra Johnson talking about linking machine-knitted pieces together after they have come out of the Shima machine. The linking machine has loads of tiny hooks, which each take one stitch from the knitting. The pieces are then sewn together through these stitches by the linking machine. Sandra is explaining how the cardigan she is working on will be joined together, and I am asking her about the whole process. In the background, the shima machine churns on. This is where Sandra works as a linker; she also has a croft in Yell and her own flock of Shetland sheep. I loved meeting Sandra, who has a hand in every part of the wool industry here on Shetland, from growing the wool at the start, to seaming up knitted garments at the end. Recorded with Audio Technica BP4029 and FOSTEX FR-2LE.
