Recordist's notes
Towards the end of a soundwalk that myself and a colleague were leading as part of a field recording course, our little group ran into an apiarist who had been setting up a beehive in the University grounds as part of an architectural research programme. He was very talkative about this project and I was tired, so am ashamed to say that I zoned out from what he was saying. I was sort of idly staring into space and not really listening, when I noticed that a number of lovely fat, fuzzy bees were going in and out of a tiny hole in the soil. I think they are mining bees. I watched closely for a little while while the apiarist (oblivious!) carried on talking loudly about his research. I realised there was a hole close to where the bees were moving in and out of the ground which I could poke one of my omni-directional microphones into, and so I did this, and listened closely while what seemed to be three bumble bees came and went out of their wee dwelling in the ground. I don't think of myself as any sort of nature recordist, but I really liked being able to hear the tiny feet of bees passing over the ground as they entered and exited their "burrow" and it was amazing to be able to get a microphone so close to their sounds. The apiarist didn't really notice what I was up to and left the scene after a while, at which point I shooed everyone away and said I'd meet them back at the study room later, and took several moments to listen to my new friend bees in relative peace and quiet. Recorded with Naiant X-X microphones plugged into a FOSTEX FR-2LE at one end, and a bumble bee burrow at the other.
