Recordist's notes

The Kozmice bird meadows is a site in the Opava river valley - since 2006 privately owned by the Semix Pluso food company - that is being actively rewilded for wetland species. From the 1960s to the 1990s the valley was subject to river straightening, excess agricultural chemical use, and gravel extraction that seriously degraded it's environment and ecology. In recent years attempts have been made to reverse this and the bird meadows is one rather succesful example. Many species now breed here including lapwing, common terns (1000s kilometers from the sea), cranes, sea eagles and grasshopper warblers. It is a very pleasant place to spend time. The number of species is very obvious in the variety of bird song to be heard, frogs are abundant, as are roe deer. Exmoor ponies and rare breed cattle have been introduced to help in the landscape restoration. A radio.earth audio stream was set up here in the first week of May 2024 coinciding with beautiful warm weather. All the tracks here are recordings from that stream. The frogs heard are mostly marsh frogs, but there are other amphibian species too.
