Recordist's notes
This track was uploaded to radio.aporee in July 2026, but recorded in June 2008, during an early morning walk in the peaceful Czech village of Krasna Hora. Sadly, this was my only visit. So listening to these recordings 18 years later has triggered a lot of memories of the place and how it sounded. Actually, having said that I'm wondering how real the sound memories really are. I have played these recording in the year between, although not recently, so the original and recorded memories must be totally blurred by now. Nevertheless two aspects of the recordings stand out. Firstly the absence of background noise. There none of the low frequencies that I now hear everywhere else, including in rural areas of the UK and Germany that I visit regularly. Maybe it is still like that in Krasna Hora, if so that would be very rare. And secondly the number of birds singing is enough for the chorus to merge into one intense sound. Picking out individual voices is possible, but often difficult. The dawn choruses that I hear today in other places have far fewer singing, sometimes only one or two. It is a sad reflection on the catastrophic decline in the numbers of common birds in Europe, even of the most plentiful species.
