Recordist's notes
A stand of clay aeolian ocarinas. About 20 each with a reed tail to point it into the wind. French artist and composer, Pierre Sauvageot (Lieux publics, France) created a a symphonic march for 500 aeolian instruments and moving audience on Birkrigg Common, near Ulverston, Cumbria from 3-5 June 2011. Produced by Lakes Alive 500 Aeolian instruments (after the Greek god, Aeolus, keeper of the wind) were installed for 3 days upon the common. The instruments were played and powered only by the wind, creating an enchanting musical soundscape which could be experienced as you rest or move amongst the instruments. The installation used a mixture of conventional and purpose built instruments for example, metal and wood cellos, strings, flutes, Balinese scarecrows, sirens, gongs, harps and bamboo organs. They were organised into six sections, each named after different types of winds from around the world. The sounds that they created, and the tempo of the music, depended entirely upon the strength and the direction of the wind. All the sounds on this map were recorded and edited by Dan Fox, director of Sound Intervention during the building of the installation and on the three days it was open to the public. The recordings are placed in the positions the actual instruments were installed. The audience route followed a roughly clockwise direction from the Bamborgue (1) to the Final (6).
