Recordist's notes

Imagine my surprise to hear a cuckoo 'cuckoo-ing' in the Hinterhof. Definitely a first, so I rushed to record through the window. The cuckoo-ing was quickly followed by a female cuckoo 'bubbling', then a peregrine falcon, then a blackcap warbling and other species - a very welcome explosion of bio-diversity in under a minute. Was very pleased to find that someone had taken to playing bird song tracks from their own open window - not loud, but pleasantly clear. Quite different from the normal TVs and music. It's a great idea but I don't know who is doing it as yet. This part of Berlin has had none of the coordinated clapping or bell ringing in response to Covid-19 as described by others. But these short, one-off, spontaneous sonic gestures are totally unexpected and very nice. Fingers crossed for more. Perhaps the beginnings of a new sonic art form. Interesting to hear that the real birds (pigeons) just carried on as normal, completely un-worried by the new sonic arrivals.
