Recordist's notes

Fen Covert is a wet woodland at the end of Westwood Marsh, one of the largest reed beds in the UK. Both are managed by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust and have been nature reserves for decades. The woodland is a unique, atmospheric, damp, mysterious, sometimes ghostly place. I know of no other like it. Trees (mostly silver birches and alders) grow from the waterlogged soil. Many have fallen, root bolls upwards, but continue to survive entwinning themselves around each other to creating strange unworldly shapes. Mosses and lichens add vivid greens and greys to the darker, more subdued, woody colours. In season holly berries and honeysuckle flowers draw your eyes to flashes of red or white. Animals and birds rarely show themselves, but but one hears their sounds, deer barks echo through the trees, distant pheasants explode into flight, robins sing, mosquitos whine. This location is a point where the wood, marsh and surrounding planted pine forest are relatively close to each other. The audio stream was set up for 2 April days in a bramble bush beside a fallen log. Nearby is an apple tree in blossom. Sometimes the petals drop near the mics with a soft click. This track starts with 2 walkers passing by, but features a blackcap. Blackcaps move around while they sing and this one briefly gets so close to the mics that it overloads. One can hear allsorts of details in the song that would not be audible further away.
