Recordist's notes

Honey has become extremely broody and we have had to pop some fake eggs into the duck house to encourage her to lay in there rather than in her secret nests all over the garden from which it is much harder to retrieve the actual, edible eggs. So there are fake eggs in the duck house, and then she and Pretzel usually lay 2 in there overnight. Come morning, Honey can be found clucking over the "clutch" very protectively, so I decided to record her inside the duck house. I have left in the bit of handling noise as when I approached to put my recorder gently in the corner, she made an amazing warning noise - very huffy and puffy - which I have never heard before. If I cut out the handling noise, the intrusion on her space and subsequent protective warning sound would be lost, and I think they are brilliant little sonic insights into duck behaviour. Also, silly me, I was making an instagram video of my ducks at the same time as doing this recording, and you can hear the recorded duck sound captured on my phone drifting out of the living room into the garden. I am amazed how loud it sounds, and now I feel bad because in this recording it feels like you can hear the other duck - Pretzel - going nuts, trying to respond to the other duck sound she can hear (which is the duck sound on my phone). I love the parts in the recording where you can clearly hear Honey inside the duck house and Pretzel outside the duck house, replying to each other. And the very little sound of Honey turning the eggs over and guarding them in the duck house.
