Recordist's notes
Demolition of the old pink Art Deco building that is documented in my book, The KNITSONIK Stranded Colourwork Sourcebook, began last week. In this recording, you can hear the sounds of demolition as experienced in the surrounding area; I put my little handheld recorder up in a tree, a small distance from the site. It was very interesting to see the building coming down, and to get some sense of what it was originally made of - rebar, cast concrete, cheap bricks, stucco, asbestos - and to hear those materials singing one last time as pulled apart by the amazing machinery used for the job. A sparrow in the neighbourhood sang all the way through and it was a beautiful day in spite of the slightly sad demise of this local Deco gem...
