Recordist's notes

During its manufacture, a newly built piano must be played at length to embed the multitude of parts into their settled positions with each other. It is a lengthy task, so a machine has been designed to hammer all the keys across the keyboard simultaneously and repeatedly for many hours. The sound created is very loud - soundproofed rooms have been built especially - and to deaden the noise further weights are places on the strings to reduce their sustain. We were very kindly given a demonstration and this recording is the result. During it the weights are removed one by one starting with the lowest pitches and then replaced again. The highest notes show the greatest difference.
